Happiness is a Bundle of Used Clothes The hot weather has arrived on the east coast, with temps in the mid 80's. The weather has spurred me to sort through my daughter’s wardrobe to see what she has grown out of since last summer. People tell me she is so much taller than she was a year ago, and it’s true. I expect to have a considerable stack of clothes to drop off for donation; fortunately, I can do that right here at the office. Letter from Mozambique: Clothing, Crops, and a Win-Win Combination My journey in Mozambique began with a tour of a used clothing recycling facility in the port city of Beira. It ended with visits to smallholder farmers in the wilds of Gorongosa. These two experiences became the bookends of my trip. Looking back, they were a reflection of how Planet Aid combines used clothing collection with development aid in a win-win formula. Back to School or Back to the Landfill? During most of August and early September the barrage of TV, newspaper, and magazine ads seemed to shout one clear message – It’s Back to School Time! While my two teen-age kids didn’t need reminding of that fact, especially during the last precious weeks of summer vacation, they were excited about one aspect – new school clothes. Every year in most U.S. households with school-age children, this shopping ritual involves treks to the mall and clicking through online catalogues. Aside from the Christmas shopping frenzy, back-to-school season represents the bulk of new clothes sales for many retailers. Moving 100 Million Pounds of Clothing Planet Aid receives approximately 100 million pounds of used clothing and shoes every year from its donors. That means that every year 100 million pounds of clothing are spared from the landfill and instead get a second life with an appreciative new owner. It takes a team effort of many individuals in the U.S. to move that quantity of clothing from collection bin, to warehouse, to shipping port. Every day our drivers are out servicing the 13,000 bins nationwide and filling their trucks. What’s it like to be a Planet Aid driver? This week our local paper interviewed one of our drivers, Bill Steelman, to gain his perspective. You can read all about it at the Ellicott City Patch. Humana UFF

Fighting with the Poor The degree “Fighting with the Poor” is new and groundbreaking in that it focuses directly on training students in the theory and practice of transformational processes in society, and emphasizes the responsibility of educated people to bring about justice and equality. “Fighting with the Poor” provides students with a deeper understanding of the poor and the basis of their plight, while raising the personal willingness and ability and readiness of students to fight the good fight side by side with the poor. Vocational Training The Humana People to People Vocational Training Schools provide young people with training and support to start a career, and thus expand the skilled labor force and create economic development. Members currently run 11 vocational schools in Angola, Guinea Bissau, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe. They provide vocational skills training to approximately 1,600 students per year. Schools for Children Humana People to People member organizations currently operate 18 primary and secondary schools in Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and India. These schools provide education for orphans and other children whose situation has caused them to stop attending school and, in many cases, live on the street. In Africa, Humana People to People has developed a specific model for these vulnerable children called Children’s Towns. These are boarding schools with a full-time program, where children live and receive lessons in academic and practical life skills. The schools strive for the students to re-unite with their extended families and enter the mainstream school system after some years of rehabilitation. Humana HPPI

CAADP global community The global community has awakened to the issue of food security. Hopefully increasing funds for assisting the small-scale farmer will be forthcoming. Several encouraging developments in recent years suggest this. At L’Aquila in 2009, the promise of a Global Partnership for Agriculture and Food Security was made. CAADP is an African framework to increase agricultural productivity and public spending investing in agriculture. The US government has also made a commitment to assist the small scale farmers in “Feed the Future”. The Millennium Development Goals agreements also demand action. production processes and income The method is utilizing collective efforts in and by the clubs, exploits of readily available knowledge, introduces better implementation of known methods of production and importantly the inspirational input, both theoretical and practical, by the Humana People to People project leadership. The results are the betterment of all production processes and income, a new spirit of hope and with this momentum a focus on personal health and education. The togetherness in the club also provides for a change of spirit from average neighbor connectivity to a more generous community feel. This also improves the respect forevery farmer, be it woman or man. Humana People to People Farmers’ Clubs Today, 500 million small scale farmers live in Africa, Asia and Latin America and through their production support 2 billion people. Most of them live for under 2 dollars a day and therefore are poor. The small scale farmers aim at improving productivity, better their livelihood and at carving a place in the modern world for their families and their communities. Food for all program of Humana People to People Humana People to People started the program from Community to commercial farmers back in 1998, and by building on the experiences of that program that was implemented in Zimbabwe in 1998-2000 Humana People to People started to organise farmers in Farmers Clubs. Today, the 35 Humana organisations work to increase food security in all of the countries in which we work: Angola, Belize, Brazil, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Guinea-Bissau, India, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. There are areas in these countries that are some of the most affected by poverty and hunger in the world. From international recycling firm to one-person shop When ready for export clothes are pressed into 1,000 pound bales, either sorted or unsorted, depending on the next buyer’s needs. Bales are typically shipped in sea-going, 40-foot containers. Upon reaching a destination port in Africa, Asia, Europe, India, China, South or Central America, bales are routed to overland locations by truck or railcar. Along the way numerous transactions may occur. Bales may be divided into smaller bundles for sale to wholesalers or distributors down the line. Ultimately, an aspiring entrepreneur in a Mozambique village may buy a 100-lb sack for resale to his friends and neighbors. A wearable pair of work shoes originally purchased new for $50 may protect the feet of a farmer in Malawi for just a couple of dollars. A used children’s polo shirt re-bought for 45 cents may serve as daily wear for a student attending a school in India. Volunteer in Africa If you are interested in giving your time by volunteering to work in Africa supporting development aid projects you should contact our partner The College for International Co-operation and Development (CICD) in Hull. CICD educates volunteers to work in Humana People to People’s projects in Africa and India. The college offers the students a two year program. For the first 6 months they learn about the country that they are going to and the work that they are going to carry out either in Africa or India. Big questions like climate change and the great divide between the rich and poor are also on the agenda. For the next 3 months the students are fundraising, working, saving and preparing for a 3 month journey to their project in the developing world. The project work will last for 6 months and thereafter the students will study and carry out promotional work for 6 months to pass on their knowledge to the public. Right after filling way up our aquarium and a couple 20 litres jerry cans in Chipata, we in the direction along probably Zambia’s freeways towards Lusaka. Just what had frustrated us throughout Malawi, pleasantly surprised us inside Zambia: an enormous forest place hugging your Southern edge for kilometer upon mile. Although most of us had find about Zambia’s vastness, many of us only seasoned it while driving through it. Of course, it is larger in comparison with France, England and Ireland put together. And thus, it procured us much more time so that Lusaka in comparison with expected. For your tenth time we have broken our personal rule not to drive immediately after dark around Africa. After several inquiries many of us managed to help arrange for just a sober and also overpriced motel and vowed so that a far better place very first thing each morning. Next daytime that main concern changed together with our auto refusing to begin, yet yet again. Miraculously, it started after receiving stuck from a tree many heroic kick- and also jumpstarting. We thought i would drive directly towards the lodge most of us had selected and have into contact with Shepherd: our pal and operator of Robbie (your vehicle). Shepherd without delay sent Chanza (somebody of the) over to help you out using the Nissan. Robbie became his operation the next day in some dodgy patch of Lusaka. We could safely say it turned out successful. Now, we cannot bore you an excess of with Lusaka. Many of us got our visa to get Mozambique quick enough, many of us stayed inside three too costly, sober lodges along with met up with all the two great Irish young women who many of us had realized previously around Chipata. We experienced some wonderful Indian meal and were happy to leave the concrete new world behind since we quit for Ndola. The particular road connecting Chipata together with Mfuwe appeared to be bad, nevertheless , you recon it’s not a major highway, so it´s o . k. The same is not said for that road within a major metropolis like Ndola having 300, 000 as well as inhabitants. The driveways were as bad as or perhaps worse as compared to those in direction of Luangwa. Sometimes this felt just like navigating from a storm with a rough sea. After a few faulty graph reading, we anchored our ship on the harbour regarding Hope Humana (HH). We was pleasantly received using a walk and dinner by Andrew plus Sheily. Andrew the schedule for your forthcoming weeks time was based round the EduToy in order to give the collaboration in between HH as well as Bobbi Tolerate full priority, which was excellent, to state the minimum. Andrew is actually project boss at Anticipation Humana and also his duty is massive, as HH facilitates 80 organizations of all around twenty individuals per class. It also services Ndola district featuring its 200 schools and 1000s of inhabitants inside urban and also rural spots. Hope Humana deploys positive living plans for HIV patients through which they are generally taught how to live long so that as healthy as it can be with their disease, they beat prejudices regarding the disease, and provide HIV testing and traditional counseling. HH works under that wings regarding DAPP: Development Assist from People to the people. This is definitely an international operation with branches around the globe. In the actual Netherlands they're just well known thus to their clothing programs. Maybe a number of the clothes you have donated, have realized their way in a single of DAPP’s many resale shops. Mama’s along with Healers: Hope Humana’s Organizations Hope Humana has several industry officers: enthusiastic volunteers who visit, tips and assist between a couple and 4 (#(! )#) organizations per day. Only their transport cash and noon-time meal is presented by Humana Expect. Next fot it, they can make use of bikes to receive from one project towards other. These people form your backbone of the organisation. We possessed the privilege to figure closely and also a few of these stars plus visited two organizations. One was an organization of 20 women who looked after one yet another financially and also spiritually. HH’s system of well doers provided a place for them to figure, make ideas and expand the hen chickens they piled up money for a while ago. As time passes they are actually able to trade two one hundred dollars chickens every 3 months, buy fresh food along with chicks and cut back for his or her next investment within the bank account they share for a communal entity. This is self-induced tiny financing at its premier! Geartsje along with I was very impressed utilizing togetherness, and also a strategic, positive vision therefore to their individual as well as collective futures. Also, and also , they are operating any sewing shop. Their view on lifetime and can-do frame of mind is owning an impact on their surroundings in the process. They connect out on subjects since abuse, for instance. They can report when there is a mishap inside their community, which would usually be taken care of up throughout silence. Of course, they head by example and they do it themselves. HH does a wonderful job just simply supporting.
